Legislator Wink Announces Passage of Home Rule Message

Paves the Way for Installation of Red Light Cameras

Nassau County Legislator Wayne Wink (D-Roslyn) announces the passage of an emergency Home Rule message asking the State Legislature for a red light camera program. In a display of bi-partisan cooperation, Democratic and Republican legislators unanimously joined in asking the state to approve the plan.

The program will authorize the installation of red light cameras at 50 intersections throughout the county. Drivers crossing the intersection after the light has turned red will be photographed and ticketed. Revenues realized from these tickets will help prevent proposed cuts to Health and Human Services programs throughout the county.

“Red light cameras will enhance public safety by deterring drivers from running red lights,” Legislator Wink said. “The additional benefit of raising important revenues on a recurring basis in order to fund vital Health and Human Services programs make this initiative all the more important. I call upon the Governor and both houses of the State Legislature to support the bill sponsored by state Senator Craig Johnson and Assemblyman Chuck Lavine and I hope for its quick passage so that we may promote traffic safety for the drivers, passengers and pedestrians of Nassau County.”
