Legislator Mejias Encouraged By Large Participation In Gun Buyback Efforts

Nassau County Legislator Roger Corbin, center, joined Nassau County Legislator Dave Mejias, from left, District Attorney Kathleen Rice, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi and members of the clergy and law enforcement at a press conference. It included a display of the some of the firearms dropped off at churches by people who participated in the County’s buyback program.

Many Nassau County residents participated in a County police anonymous gun buyback program held on December 20, an opportunity to bring illegal handguns, sawed-off shotguns, BB guns and air pistols to four churches and receive cash in return. The program, a big success, was funded with money seized in criminal investigations.

Legislator Roger Corbin (D-Westbury) spoke in support of the program at a press conference held by Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, clergy members, District Attorney Kathleen Rice, and law enforcement officials.

“It is imperative that we continue to offer these types of opportunities to keep our communities safe and gun-free,” said Legislator Corbin. “People need to understand that their participation is the right thing; getting guns off the streets can save an innocent person’s life.”
