Legislator Mejias Congratulates Dalers, Winners of NYS Title, at Meeting of the Nassau County Legislature

Nassau County Legislator Dave Mejias (D-Farmingdale) congratulated the Farmingdale Lady Dalers Lacrosse Team at a recent meeting of the Nassau County Legislature presenting them with a county citation. The girls, who have been touted as the number one team in Lacrosse Magazine’s 2009 high school rankings, won their first New York state title this spring.

“Too often the accomplishments of women in sports have taken a backseat to men,” said Legislator Mejias adding that Title IX, a law enacted in 1972, was created to rectify this disparity. “These young ladies embody everything Title IX is about. They work hard as a team and possess extraordinary dedication. I’d like to congratulate them for winning the state title.”

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, now known as the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act (in honor of its principal author) is commonly known as Title IX, a United States law enacted on June 23, 1972. Title IX states that: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

The Dalers were led by Coach Shari Campbell, the 2009 Nassau County Coach of the Year. Lauren Maksym made 12 saves in the state final and was named Long Island Player of the Year by Newsday.
