Legislator Yatauro Announces LIPA Assistance for Seniors
Nassau County Legislator Diane Yatauro (D-Glen Cove) is pleased to inform her senior citizen constituents that the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) has created a $10 million program to assist
income-eligible senior citizens in paying their electric bills. Seniors who meet certain criteria will receive a one-time, $200 bill credit.
Legislator Yatauro said, “This LIPA program comes at a time when our hard-pressed senior citizens are struggling with monthly payments in this tough economy. I applaud LIPA President Kevin Law and the authority for their timely action to give our seniors a much-needed break.”
The program, known as “The Income-Eligible Energy Assistance Program,” offers a one-time $200 bill credit to ease the burden of qualifying seniors. Those who wish to participate must meet several requirements including: be 62 years of age or older; be a LIPA electric account holder; and must meet the income eligible guidelines. Seniors may apply in person at any LIPA Customer Service Center of by mail. According to LIPA, this program is fund from a rate mitigation package of funds realized largely through a settlement of disputed payments under a previous Management Services Agreement (MSA) with KeySpan and through saving obtained under the renegotiated MSA with National Grid after its announced merger with KeySpan.
