Yatauro and Legislature Approve Purchase of Smithers Property to Preserve Open Space in Nassau County
Nassau County Presiding Officer Diane Yatauro (D-Glen Cove) and her fellow legislators today approved the $7.8 million purchase of the Smithers property in Mill Neck, a 25-acre parcel of land containing scenic woods, ponds and wildlife. The purchase was funded by $100 million Environmental Bond Program approved by voters in 2006.
“I am proud that this legislature continues to honor the mandate of the voters by preserving this beautiful piece of property. Our safeguards open space, adds to the County’s parks system and protects the numerous aquatic plants, animals and birds that call the area home. We have ensured that current and future residents of Nassau County will be able to enjoy the natural splendor of this area,” Yatauro said.
Based on its environmental significance, the Smithers property was ranked #1 on a list of recommendations by the Environmental Program Advisory Committee. It is within a state-designated Special Groundwater Protection Area (SGPA) and contains two ponds, as well as many of the fresh-water springs that supply Shu Swamp, Beaver Dam and Mill Neck Creek.
“We would also like to thank the members of the Nassau County Legislature for voting "yes" to acquiring this spectacular and environmentally significant property,” said Lisa Ott, President of the North Shore Land Alliance. “This decision will result in the protection of not only the property itself, but of Beaver Brook, nearby Shu Swamp Preserve, and Long Island Sound.”
