Legislator Yatauro Hails Drug Disposal Success
“I am pleased that so many residents participated in this groundbreaking initiative,” said Legislator Diane Yatauro (D-Glen Cove) last week, following the first-ever, County-wide drug disposal program. “Two large trash bags were filled with unwanted medications. This is a great beginning to what I trust will be an ongoing event.” The bags were filled with expired antibiotics and unused pain medications, such as Vicodin and Oxycontin, which are known to be gateways to teenage drug abuse.
Legislator Yatauro enlisted the participation of the Glen Cove Police Department in the program that included all eight Nassau County Police Precincts as drop-off sites for unwanted, expired, unused or illicit drugs.
Glen Cove Police Chief William Whitton said, “The medicine we collected was readied for proper disposal thereby ensuring the safety of our community’s residents, especially our children.”
Legislator Yatauro concluded, “This is not only a good program to protect children from drug abuse, it is also good for the environment since we can control the disposal of unwanted medicines.”
