Garvies Point Museum Opens Registration for Jewelry Classes

Registration has opened for the popular jewelry-making classes offered at Garvies Point Museum and Preserve in Glen Cove, announced Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi. The “Jewelry-Lapidary Workshops” will begin on February 13, 2008, with two 12-session courses offered.

The workshops, designed both for beginners and experienced jewelry-makers and crafters, provide small class size and individual attention within a fully equipped professional jewelry studio.

Contemporary and traditional jewelry-making basics will be taught, including lapidary (the cutting and polishing of stone), drilling, sawing, filing, soldering, and polishing of metals for jewelry and small sculptures. In addition, the classes will cover such techniques as acid-etching, anodizing, chain-making, cold connections, forging, granulation, kum-boo, mokume-gane, reticulation, stone setting, wire-weaving, and working with precious metal clay and free-form casting.

Classes will meet on Wednesdays with afternoon (1-4 p.m.) and an evening (6-9 p.m.) sessions available. The class fee is $240, with a reduced fee of $450 for those wishing to sign up for both sessions. For payment information and registration, call Garvies Point at 516-571-8011.

The Garvies Point Museum and beautiful adjoining 62-acre preserve are located along Hempstead Harbor at 50 Barry Drive in Glen Cove. In addition to its permanent exhibits, the museum offers a regular schedule of films and other programming related to Native American life and geology. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fees are $2 for adults and $1 for children 4-14 years of age. For additional information, call 516-571-8010.
