Old Bethpage Village Restoration (OBVR) will open its 2008 season by joining in the National Pig Day celebration on March 1-2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., announced Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi. The event, started by a Texas teacher in 1972, is designed to remind the public about the intelligence and sociability of these animals.
As elsewhere in the U.S., the pig has relevance to Long Island’s history, where it was a traditional staple of farm life. In addition to their practical value as living “recycling machines” and ultimately as food, the pig was a source of entertainment for farm children, and the inspiration for songs, stories and games.
As it pays homage to this animal, OBVR will provide a range of entertainment, including a “Pigs in the Clover” hunt; readings of notable pig tales such as the “True Story of the Three Little Pigs” by A. Wolf; a pig magic lantern show; and mechanical pig races, among other activities.
But the highlight of the day for many families will involve the opportunity to meet the Village’s resident pig family, made up of George and Sophie and their offspring.
“We have a long tradition of educating the public about Long Island’s agricultural traditions, but we’re particularly excited this year to be opening our season by taking part in this very enjoyable national celebration,” says OBVR Site Director and Curator Jim McKenna.
Old Bethpage Village Restoration provides visitors with a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience life in a large, recreated mid-19th-century American village set on more than 200 acres. It is located on Round Swamp Road in Old Bethpage (exit 48 on the LIE); for more information, call 516-572-8400.
Hours at OBVR are Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Entrance fees are $5 (children 4 - 14, seniors and volunteer firefighters) and $7 (adults); children under four years of age are admitted free.
