South Shore Audubon Society Sponsors Cleanup of Brookside Preserve on April 6

The 22-acre Brookside Preserve includes the clear-water Milburn Creek.

The South Shore Audubon Society is sponsoring a cleanup of Brookside Preserve in Freeport on Sunday, April 6, at 1 p.m., announced Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi.

Acquired by the County in 1989 and designated a perpetually preserved greenspace, Brookside is a 22-acre freshwater property located on Brookside Avenue just north of Sunrise Highway.

The preserve offers a peaceful setting of woods and trails and incorporates the shallow Milburn Creek, with its clear water and sand and pebble bed.

The woods, comprising red maple, white oak and cherry trees, attract numerous bird species, including the wood thrush and tufted titmouse. On the south side of the preserve, the remains of the 19th-century red-brick Brooklyn Water Works building are visible (that property is privately owned).

“This is an opportunity for residents and the public at large to help enhance the local environment and make the preserve a more enjoyable place to visit,” says Marilyn Hametz, a member of the South Shore Audubon Society board.

Those wishing to volunteer may call 516-868-5480; for more information about the South Shore Audubon Society, visit www.ssaudubonsociety.org.
