Duke University lacrosse coach John Danowski recently told Newsday that the new lacrosse field at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale is the “best public venue around.” The artificial turf field, installed in 2007, is located in Mitchel Stadium and is also designed for use by football and soccer teams.
Danowski, the former coach at Hofstra University, was at Mitchel Stadium for a game with Dartmouth University on March 29. Duke, which sports one of the top lacrosse programs at the college level, defeated Dartmouth in that game, 16-9, in front of 6,500 fans.
Other college lacrosse teams that have played on the new field include Cornell University, Navy and Nassau Community College. The Long Island Lizards, of Major League Lacrosse, are scheduled to play at Mitchel on May 17, 2008.
A 49-acre complex centrally located in the “Hub” area just west of Nassau Coliseum and opposite the Long Island Children’s and Aviation museums on Davis Avenue, Mitchel hosts a variety of amateur and professional athletic events.
In addition to the field at the stadium, which also has nine track lanes, there are traditional grass fields for softball and baseball that can be used for soccer, football or lacrosse. All fields require a permit for use (fee required).
The public may use the stadium track during times when no events are scheduled. For information about Mitchel Athletic Complex, call 572-0400.
