Cantiague Park

Cantiague Park has been part of the county park system since 1961 and is centrally located in Hicksville, just off the Northern State Parkway and east of the Wantagh State Parkway. When the park opened, it represented the second major park the County managed, in addition to Eisenhower Park, and was a response to the needs of a growing County population. It was also the first park offering a swimming pool and an artificial skating rink. This 127-acre park offers the following activities:

Athletics/Physical Activities:

  • There are five lighted tennis courts (Leisure Pass and fee required);
  • six lighted handball/paddleball courts;
  • and three lighted basketball courts.
  • Athletic fields, lighted for night play, include four softball fields and four multi-sport fields (two lighted). Soccer, football, lacrosse and rugby are played on the multi-sport fields. All sports fields require permits and fees (Leisure Pass required; call 516-572-0248).

Family/Kids:

  • A renovated 18-hole miniature golf course is a popular attraction for children and families (fee).
  • A playground provides activities for children of varying ages, from pre-schoolers to teens.
  • There are two reserved picnic areas (Leisure Pass required and fee; to reserve, call 516-571-7056) and one non-reserved family area.

 Golf

  • Cantiague features a 9-hole, par-30 golf course (Leisure Pass and fee required). The course is 1,878 yards, with holes ranging from 150 yards to 272 yards.

Ice Rink at Cantiague ParkIce Skating

  • Cantiague’s indoor ice skating rink is a magnificent facility that is used by recreational skaters and hockey teams. The rink has also played host to Olympic gold medalists such as Nancy Kerrigan, who performed there in 2004, and was the New York Islanders (National Hockey League) practice facility from 1979 to 1992. Skating lessons are available, as is a skate rental. Ice rentals are also available on weekdays until 3 p.m., with fees of $325 per hour for proprietary groups and $295 for nonprofits. The rink also has a snack bar and bleacher seating. A fee is charged at the rink.

Swimming:

  • The swimming pool complex, named by News12 Long Island viewers as the best outdoor swimming facility on Long Island, includes an Olympic-sized pool, two water slides, a diving pool, a “kiddie” pool, a training pool and an interactive water-play area. Lockers, showers and a refreshment area are located near the pool. Fee required, with Leisure Pass holders eligible for a discount. The pool will open on June 27, 2008, and remains open through Labor Day.
  • Hours: Mon.-Sun., 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • Fees (daily): resident adult, $7; resident child (4-17 years of age), $5; senior, disabled, vol. firefighter, ambulance corps auxiliary police, veterans, $3; non-resident adult, $20, non-resident child guest, $15. Family ($225), individual ($90) and senior ($50) memberships are also available. A Leisure Pass is required for residents to receive the resident rate.

Other Activities:

  • In the gaming area next to the playground, there are shuffleboard courts, a bocci court, and tables with inlaid chess and checker boards.

To reach Cantiague Park, take the Long Island Expressway to Exit 41 South (Broadway). Take fork (106/107) to West John Street. Turn right onto West John and proceed to Cantiague Park. The entrance is on your right.

Take the Southern State Parkway to Exit 29 North (Hicksville Road). Proceed approximately 2-3 miles into Hicksville. Turn right onto West John Street and proceed into Cantiague Park. The entrance is on your right.

Cantiague Park Begins Fall Skating Lesson Registration on September 2

Registration for Fall 2008 ice skating classes at the beautiful indoor ice skating rink at Cantiague Park begins on September 2, announced Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi.

Classes — in several age and skill levels, from “Tots” to “Freestyle” — begin on September 22 and run through November 21; they will be formed with a minimum of four students and a maximum of 10 per class. The program consists of eight half-hour lessons for each age and skill level, with the various classes offered on Mondays from 4 - 5:30 p.m.; Fridays from 4 - 5:30 p.m.; and Saturdays from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Tuition is $120 for children and adults and skate rentals are available for $5 per rental.

Registration at the Cantiague rink will take place seven days a week from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. and will continue until classes are filled. Classes are open only to Nassau County residents, and Leisure Passes are required (those under 13 years of age may use their parent’s Leisure Pass number). Checks may be made payable to “Treasurer of Nassau County.”

Cantiague Park Pool Mixes Swimming and Big Screen Olympic Action on August 15-16

Cantiague Park will join in the Olympic spirit by hosting “The Ultimate Olympic Watch Party” at its large water theme complex on August 15 - 16, announced Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi. Between 8 and 11 p.m. on both nights, visitors to the complex will be able to enjoy the water while watching swimming events from Beijing on a big screen set-up. In addition, the park will provide games and giveaways for the first 50 people. 

Admission is $5 for children and $7 for adults with Leisure Pass.

The event is sponsored by USA Swimming and the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums. Cantiague Park is located on West John Street in Hicksville less than a mile west of the intersection with Route 106/107. For information, call 516-571-7056

 


 

Nassau County Outdoor Pools to Open for Summer Season on June 27

Four of Nassau County’s outdoor swimming pool complexes will open on Friday, June 27, with a fifth park, Nickerson Beach, opening its pools on June 21, announced Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi.

The County’s pool complexes include three comprehensive “water theme” facilities at Cantiague Park in Hicksville (571-7056), North Woodmere Park (571-7800) and Wantagh Park (571-7460). The water theme parks provide a summer of fun for adults, teens and youngsters with Olympic-size swimming pools, diving pools, “kiddie” pools, interactive water-play areas and water slides. In December 2006, the pool at Wantagh Park, which features a beautiful waterfront location, was named "Best Public Pool on Long Island" by the Long Island Press, the weekly newspaper.

The large swimming complex at Christopher Morley Park (571-8113) in Roslyn-North Hills includes an Olympic-size pool, diving tank with boards, and a kiddie pool with a beautiful wooded preserve behind it. At Nickerson Beach Park (571-7700) in Lido, a 121-acre oceanfront park, there are two small pools as well as kiddie pools.

The pools at Cantiague, Christopher Morley, North Woodmere and Wantagh parks also offer swimming lessons for adults and children over the summer.

Pools are open seven days a week, but hours vary slightly by park, opening at either 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. and closing at either 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. Admission is available on a daily basis at all pools or on a seasonal basis at Cantiague Park, North Woodmere Park and Wantagh Park, with fees ranging by age and resident status (a valid Leisure Pass is required to receive the resident rate).

Daily fees are as follows: resident adult, $7; resident child (4-17 years of age), $5; senior, disabled, volunteer firefighter, ambulance corps, auxiliary police andveterans, $3; non-resident adult, $20; and non-resident child guest, $15. A Leisure Pass is required for residents to receive the resident rate.

The admission fee now includes access to the water slides at the three water theme parks.

At Cantiague, North Woodmere and Wantagh parks, seasonal passes for residents with Leisure Passes are also available for families ($225), individuals ($90) and seniors ($50) .

Cantiague Park Begins Accepting Applications for Hockey League

Cantiague Park, which has one of the finest indoor skating rinks on Long Island, is accepting applications for the Spring 2008 Nassau County Hockey Program, announced Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi. The applications will be accepted until the programs are fully booked or April 2.

The eight-week program, for children born between 1994 and 2003, runs from the first week of April through the third week of May and consists of clinics, league schedules, team practices and exhibition games.

Nassau County residents can obtain a registration form online at “www.nassaucountyhockey.com,” with registration on a first-come, first-serve basis; or call 516-571-7009 for more information. There are two separate fees totaling between $200-$230 for residents and $225-255 for nonresidents.

The onetime practice facility for the New York Islanders, the indoor ice rink at Cantiague Park has been selected by News 12 Long Island as “Best of Long Island.” The rink is open seven days a week for public skating sessions.

Reservations for Picnic Areas Available Beginning February 4

Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi has announced that picnic reservations for the coming season may be made at Nassau County parks beginning Monday, February 4, 2008. Reservations may be made from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week (except where otherwise indicated) at the following parks:

Reservations must be made in person at park locations, and a valid Leisure Pass and appropriate payment (fees depend upon group size) must be presented to obtain a confirmed reservation. Payment can be made by cash, check (made out to “Treasurer of Nassau County”) or credit card (at some locations). “Rain-or-shine” shelter areas are available at Cedar Creek Park, Rev. Arthur Mackey Sr. Park, Nickerson Beach Park and Wantagh Park.

County regulations require that 75% of all picnic participants be Nassau County residents. A special permit is required for the use of alcoholic beverages, and this permit must be purchased at least one week in advance of any reserved or unreserved picnic. To make catering arrangements, patrons must contact the park concessionaire; Dover Caterers, at 516-933-4444, ext. 12 or 16. Picnic reservations must be secured from the individual park before catering can be arranged.

 


News 12 Long Island Selects Cantiague Park's Ice Skating Rink
as "Best of Long Island"

News 12 Long Island has selected Cantiague Park’s busy indoor ice skating rink as “Best of Long Island,” a selection made on the basis of viewer nominations and surveys, announced County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi. News 12 reporter Elizabeth Hashagen visited the rink on December 27 to interview Park Manager Mark LaMarr as well as skaters, with the story airing on the 24-hour TV news channel on December 29.

A longtime favorite spot for local skaters and youth hockey teams, Cantiague’s indoor ice skating rink has also played host to Olympic gold medalists such as Nancy Kerrigan, who performed there in 2004, and was the New York Islanders (National Hockey League) practice facility from 1979 to 1992.

The rink is open Monday through Sunday (closed New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day) from September through May and offers approximately 30 hours of public sessions a week, including speed-skating sessions. In addition, the rink has hockey programs, group and private lessons, and figure skating clubs.

Ice rink fees are $5.50 for adults with Leisure Passports and $3.50 for children with Leisure Passports. For patrons without Leisure Passports, the fees are $12 for adults and $8 for children. Seniors, those with disabilities, veterans and volunteer firefighters with Leisure Passports pay a $3 fee. Skate rentals are $4 for each session.
