MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
The cost of renting or purchasing medical equipment may be covered by Medicare or Medicaid. A physician’s prescription is required.
For rental or purchase of equipment, refer to the Yellow Pages under “Surgical Appliances and Supplies” or visit surgical supply stores and pharmacies. Pharmacists, hospital social workers, and physicians can also assist in locating proper equipment. When renting or purchasing special equipment, the following should be considered:
- Will someone come to the home to evaluate what equipment is needed?
- Is there a charge for delivery and/or installation?
- Is equipment rented with an option to purchase later?
- Will Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance cover the cost?
- What service is available to maintain and repair the equipment?
Obtain a physician’s order before renting or purchasing special equipment. Some surgical supply or home care equipment companies will provide an evaluation of the client’s home situation to advise on equipment, ramps, safety measures, etc.

TRAID-IN EQUIPMENT EXCHANGE SERVICE
This statewide free service connects or “matches” owners of assistive devices they no longer need with individuals with disabilities who need those devices. The “matched” parties make all the arrangements. An assistive device is any item, product or piece of equipment that can be used by persons with disabilities to maintain or improve their abilities. NASSAU COUNTY ‘LOAN CLOSETS’ - Some people must use equipment such as wheelchairs, commodes, hospital beds, walkers, crutches, or canes. The following service organizations operate free “loan closets” for medical equipment and supplies. Supplies are limited.
