PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

BUS TRANSPORTATION

The Nassau County Senior Citizen Leisure Passport entitles senior citizens age 60 and over to half-fare on all county-operated buses at all hours, seven days a week. Medicare cards are also acceptable for identification. An aide traveling with, and assisting a wheelchair-bound passenger, pays only half fare for a round trip at all times. Transfers can be obtained for 10¢ and are valid for two connecting bus routes in the same general direction.

CITY OF LONG BEACH BUSES

Residents of the City of Long Beach, age 60 and over, may ride the local buses at half fare during non-rush hours and all day on weekends. An official identification card can be obtained at:

City of Glen Cove:
Food shopping transportation for seniors is available through the Glen Cove Senior Community Service Center.

Shoppers travel at half fare.

Town of Hempstead: Contact the Department of Senior Enrichment for dates and times at local centers.

Town of North Hempstead:
Food shopping buses serve most communities. Seniors must complete a transportation application and have a Town of North Hempstead Senior ID Card.

Town of Oyster Bay:
Shopping bus to malls and food stores is available in some communities.

Contact the Oyster Bay Senior Community Service Center for information and schedule of Shopper’s Bus that runs from Bayville to Syosset twice weekly for food shopping.

NEW YORK CITY SUBWAYS AND BUSES

The Medicare card is the official identification, enabling persons 65 years of age or older to ride New York City subways and buses at half fare, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The half fare privilege is not available on express buses during peak periods, 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

To use the subway: Present Medicare card at change booth, pay cost of one way fare to receive a metro card. For the return trip, present the card at the subway entrance. This must be used within three months of original purchase.

To use the bus: Present Medicare card and pay half fare. You are also entitled to a free transfer. In addition, see page 30 for information on the Metrocard.

LONG ISLAND RAILROAD

Senior citizens age 65 and over may use their Medicare card, driver’s license or birth certificate at any ticket office or aboard a train to receive half fare on the Long Island Railroad except for trains arriving in N.Y.C. between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. on weekdays.

The railroad reserves the right to ask for additional personal identification or a signature sample. For information, call:

TAXI SERVICE

The Long Island Taxi and Transportation Operators Association offers 10% discounts off all regular fares to senior citizens in a number of Nassau County communities. Seniors must identify themselves when ordering a taxi and must show identification. Check with individual taxi companies.

MEDICAL AND SPECIAL TRANSPORTATION

ABLE-RIDE/PARATRANSIT PROGRAM

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, MTA Long Island Bus provides a shared ride, curb-to-curb ‘paratransit’ service for persons who have a physical or mental disability and are unable to use the fixed route bus service. Age, distance from the bus stop or inability to drive are not taken into consideration in making an eligibility determination. Reservations and advance notice are required. The fee is $3.50 each way. Companions traveling with an Able-Ride customer also pay the $3.50 one-way fare. Personal care attendants traveling with and assisting an Able-Ride customer, may ride at no charge. MEDICAID-MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Medicaid recipients may be eligible for transportation for medical purposes, depending upon their physical condition. For further information, call:

FISH (FRIENDS IN SERVICE TO HUMANITY)

FISH of Wantagh, Inc. utilizes volunteers to provide transportation to residents of Wantagh, North Wantagh, Bellmore and North Bellmore. Priority is given to medical transportation needs. Partial funding is provided by the NASSAU COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SENIOR CITIZEN AFFAIRS. Call: (516) 861-6032

FISH of New Hyde Park utilizes volunteers to provide transportation to local doctors and hospital for homebound and disabled residents of New Hyde Park and Garden City Park. Call: (516) 692-2123

LONG BEACH

With funding from the DEPARTMENT OF SENIOR CITIZEN AFFAIRS medical transportation is available for seniors living in the Long Beach area. Destinations are restricted to surrounding communities. Appointments must be made in advance. For further information and to register, call:
