Stand Down Thank You
One Hundred and thirty fivehomeless veterans were helped
on November 14, 2005 at the third annual Nassau County
Homeless Veterans Stand Down. More than 200 volunteers
from 30 veterans organizations and Marines from 1 st
Marine District in Garden City were joined by volunteers
from the Red Cross and Telephone Pioneers to provide
clothes and a turkey dinner. Government and private
social service agencies provided job search assistance
and housing and veterans benefit information. The Auxiliary
of the Nassau County America Legion and Virginia Hassler
of Merrick, NY were the primary financial backers of
this year’s event. All departments in the Nassau
County Health and Human Services vertical as well as
Public Works and Police made the event safe and successful.
New York State provided the Freeport Armory free of
charge.
The Data on Women Veterans
The estimated population of women veterans is 1.7 million,
or about 7%. of the total veterans population. There
are so many women in the military now that by 2010
the female veteran population will double to 14%. Currently,
women make up 14.8% of the active duty forces and 22.8%
of the reserve forces.
Fraud Warning
Veterans around the country are reporting that they are
getting calls from a company identifying itself as
the “Patient Care Group”. This company
is claiming that VA prescriptions are now being dispensed
through them and that if veterans want to continue
receive their medications, they must provide a credit
card number. DO NOT GIVE YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER TO
ANYONE WHO CALLS YOU. The VA has not changed the process
of receiving and dispensing prescriptions.
