Second Installment of Shellfish Seeding in Hempstead Harbor

In continuing his Healthy Nassau initiative, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi announced today that the County would be making its second installment of shellfish seeding in Hempstead Harbor, as part of a major co-operative effort to rebuild the Harbor's shellfish population and re-open the harbor to recreational shellfishing. 2 million shellfish were seeded in 2007.

Malverne, NY - As part of his ongoing Healthy Nassau initiative, Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi announced the County’s plan to acquire the five-acre Grossmann’s Farm property in Malverne. In partnership with Nassau County, the Nassau Land Trust will develop and manage the farm as part of “Grown on Long Island” campaign. County Executive Suozzi was joined by Legislator Francis X. Becker, Jr. (R-Lynbrook), and Village of Malverne Mayor Patti McDonald for the announcement.

As part of his ongoing Healthy Nassau initiative, Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi and Legislator Dave Denenberg (D-Merrick) were joined by The Nature Conservancy and a group of volunteers to remove invasive plants from Mill Pond Park in Wantagh. This effort complements $20 million worth of pond improvement projects Suozzi has led on south shore ponds over the last several years.

A new initiative will be launched on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 to measure the carbon footprint of Long Island, helping to grow the climate protection efforts which have already taken root in the region. With the assistance of ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), the Long Island Carbon Footprint Project will determine energy use and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions for each community on Long Island, providing local governments with the information needed to determine where they can focus their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint.
