Suozzi Announces Healthy Nassau Partnership with Roosevelt Field
Calls on Residents to Join Healthy Nassau-Roosevelt Field Mall Walking Club
Mineola, NY—Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi, as part of his Healthy Nassau initiative to make Nassau County the healthiest county in the nation, is announcing a partnership with Roosevelt Field shopping mall and the creation of a mall walking circuit.
"Two years ago, I announced a plan to make Nassau the healthiest county in the nation and we are almost there," said County Executive Suozzi. "I am pleased to work with Roosevelt Field to offer residents another new program that will help enable them to exercise more and live healthier, more active lifestyles."
“Through the Roosevelt Field Mall Walking Club, we are able to offer Nassau County residents an ideal environment and worthwhile program in which to achieve their fitness goals year-round,” commented Roosevelt Field & The Mall at The Source Area Director of Mall Marketing Kathleen Herrmann. “This partnership with Nassau County helps us to fulfill our ongoing commitment to give back to the community and we are pleased to be affiliated with the Healthy Nassau initiative.”
The goal of the Healthy Nassau-Roosevelt Field Mall Walking Club is to increase opportunities for Nassau County residents to participate indaily physical activity thus improving overall health and reducing the risk of many chronic diseases. Through this partnership with Roosevelt Field,Nassau County residents can walk in an environment that is fun, cost-free, safe, climate controlled, accessible by public transportation and available seven days a week.
Roosevelt Field has created a beautiful one mile circuit which begins at the Macy’s court. The mall opens its doors early for walkers at 7am Monday through Saturday and 10am on Sunday. Healthy Nassau-Roosevelt Field Mall Walking Club membership requires sign-up at the Guest Services Desk, located on the main level of the mall. Benefits will include monthly meetings, store discounts, health and fitness seminars, a reusable water bottle and a Healthy Nassau t-shirt.
Healthy Nassau is County Executive Suozzi’s campaign to make Nassau the healthiest county in the nation in order to sustain a healthy environment, focusing on air, land and water, while encouraging healthy living, tending to bodies, minds and spirits.
Along with the new Healthy Nassau-Roosevelt Field Mall Walking Club, Healthy Nassau initiatives include:
• Fitness Trail at Eisenhower Park
• Ban on trans fats and the placement of calorie counts on menus;
• Working with other large municipalities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and explore mass transit options;
• Continuing to preserve the County’s remaining open space;
• Operating an organic farm at Old Bethpage Village Restoration;
• Providing space for a Farmer’s Market offering fresh, local produce;
• The Biggest Loser Weight-Off Competition for County workers;
• Seeking a state-authorized increased cigarette tax to discourage smoking
