There is a New York State identity theft statute in place to protect citizens against this crime.
You should contact the three national credit reporting agencies and request that all three place a fraud alert on your credit report. You may wish to follow your phone request with a written one. Contact information for the three national credit reporting agencies are as follows:

You should file a report with your local police precinct for identity theft so that the matter can be investigated and documented. Ask for a copy of the police report in case you are asked to supply such by bank, credit card company, or elsewhere. You might ask the credit reporting agencies if a copy of the report, or at least its file number, could be made part of the agency's records.
