Message from the Commissioner

Dear Friends,

The Nassau County Parks Department under the guidance of Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, is anticipating a summer filled with fun and enjoyment for our residents.  I would like to share with you many of the exciting events that we have planned for the coming months.  Additionally, there are many projects in progress that are expected to significantly impact the recreation opportunities within Nassau County.

Firstly, I would like to take the time to thank the many people who helped to restore all of our parks to their pre-storm state.  It was widely believed that due to the destruction brought on by the storm, many of our parks would be impaired or even closed for our summer season, but through the efforts of a great number of individuals, every park will be in full operation this summer.

On June 8th, Eisenhower Park was the venue for “Concert In The Park-Nassau Helps Nassau” Hurricane Sandy Benefit. The all-day concert featured ten different musical acts and all proceeds went to the Nassau Hurricane Recovery Fund (NHRF).  The NHRF collects private donations and then distributes them directly to Nassau County residents who are either uninsured or under insured.

This event kicked off our 2013 Nassau County Parks Summer Concert Series which includes concerts at Eisenhower Park’s Lakeside Theatre, Eisenhower Park’s mobile stage, Chelsea Mansion, Wantagh Park, and for the first time ever, Grant Park. With the acts including the likes of Huey Lewis And The News, Gloria Gaynor, Frankie Avalon, Eddie Money, Blues Traveler, and local band Big Shot, we fully expect the concerts to be well attended.  Additionally, we would like to invite you to the “TD Bank Celebrates America” fireworks show on June 29th at Eisenhower Park.  Every year this continues to be one of our most popular events and it is surely one that you will not want to miss.

Recently, the county broke ground on a new state-of-the-art sports and recreation center in Eisenhower Park.  The complex, the Ferraro Brothers Ice Center at Twin Rinks, is expected to create nearly twenty new jobs and generate an estimated $35 million in economic benefit for the local economy through the ice rink’s first five years of operation.  This advancement will be a significant boost to youth sports in Nassau County.  This initiative continued further when the New York Cosmos Soccer Club was welcomed to Mitchel Field.  The club invested $400,000 in rehabilitating the field and transforming it into their new practice facility.  These two advancements are big steps in our goal of revitalizing Nassau County as a sports and entertainment destination.

Along with the many exciting events that we have planned, the Nassau County Parks Department has been looking forward to the July 1st start of our annual Summer Recreation program, which brings a spectacular day camp experience to Nassau County children.  The program, which is held at Cantiague Park, Eisenhower Park, Nickerson Beach, and Wantagh Park, has grown exponentially since its inception in the summer of 2010 and this year we expect an enrollment of over 1,000 children.

2013 has already been filled with many positives for the Nassau County Parks Department, and we fully expect this summer to continue that trend.  We hope that you have enjoyed the events over the past few months, and as we continue into the summer season, we are looking forward to seeing you at many of the great ones that we have planned.  Additionally we would like to invite you to enjoy the many pools, beaches, and golf courses within our great county. You can find these locations at our website
