Legislative Internship
The Office of Joshua Lafazan is seeking passionate and hardworking students to join our legislative office. This internship is open to all current or recent undergrad/graduate students and exceptional high school students who are committed to public service and interested in government, public policy, communications, or a related field. This is an unpaid, part-time or full-time position at our legislative office in Mineola, NY. This is an in-person position with some work that can be done remotely. Each term's start and end date are flexible to accommodate students' class schedules. Admission is on a rolling basis.
Responsibilities:
- Log incoming calls, mail, and electronic correspondence
- Handle constituent communications with poise, professionalism, and promptness
- Conduct research
- Draft and edit legislative materials
- Assist with administrative and logistical support
- Organize and participate at community events
- Staff the Legislator or Chief of Staff at community events and meetings
- Monitor media coverage
- Collect and log data as needed
- Oversee interns and intern events
- Perform other tasks as assigned
Qualifications:
- Must have a positive, professional demeanor and strong work ethic
- Must be organized and detail oriented
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Comfortable working independently and with the team
- Ability to complete assignments on time and multitask
- Willingness to learn new skills and tasks
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed
- Must have access to reliable transportation and a laptop
- Previous government, communications, or political campaign experience preferred
- Proficiency with Google Workspace, particularly Google Sheets/Excel is a plus
