We are excited to welcome students to our Summer 2023 Government Internship Program! Students will assist Legislator Lafazan's Office to improve Nassau County for all who call it home. From communicating with constituents to facilitating county events, we have a full agenda to achieve our goals.

  • Summer Term: June 19, 2023 - August 25, 2023
  • Application Deadline: May 20, 2023
  • College/Graduate Intern Training: May 24, 2023 from 3pm-6pm
  • High School Intern Training: June 17, 2023 from 1pm-5pm
  • Eligibility: Current high school, college, and graduate students

Legislative Internship

The Office of Joshua Lafazan is seeking passionate and hardworking students to join our legislative office. This internship is open to all current or recent undergrad/graduate students and exceptional high school students who are committed to public service and interested in government, public policy, communications, or a related field. This is an unpaid, part-time or full-time position at our legislative office in Mineola, NY. This is an in-person position with some work that can be done remotely.  Interns will have the possibility to extend if the Chief of Staff deems them a valuable addition to the team. Each term's start and end date is flexible to accommodate students' class schedules. Admission is on a rolling basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Log incoming calls, mail, and electronic correspondence
  • Handle constituent communications with poise, professionalism, and promptness
  • Conduct research
  • Draft and edit legislative materials
  • Assist with administrative and logistical support
  • Organize and participate at community events
  • Staff the Legislator or Chief of Staff at community events and meetings
  • Monitor media coverage
  • Collect and log data as needed
  • Oversee interns and intern events
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Must have a positive, professional demeanor and strong work ethic
  • Must be organized and detail oriented
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Comfortable working independently and with the team
  • Ability to complete assignments on time and multitask
  • Willingness to learn new skills and tasks
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Must have access to reliable transportation and a laptop
  • Previous government, communications, or political campaign experience preferred
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace, particularly Google Sheets/Excel is a plus
