Dear Resident,
Next Tuesday, January 17th, the Nassau County Legislature will hold a hearing on redistricting during a Rules Committee meeting. The committee meeting will begin at 11:00 a.m. and is open to the public. For those who cannot attend in person, the meeting can be live streamed at http://nassaucountyny.iqm2.com/Citizens/Default.aspx. You can also click HERE to send an email to the Legislature regarding redistricting.
Every 10 years, Nassau County is required to reapportion it’s 19 county legislative districts as a result of the decennial federal census. As per the County Charter, a Temporary Districting Advisory Commission (TDAC) was established last year, consisting of 11 members who were chosen as follows: the Chairperson, a non-voting member, appointed by the County Executive; five members appointed by the Presiding Officer; and five members appointed by the Minority Leader.
Since then, the TDAC has held multiple public hearings in every city and town throughout Nassau County giving residents the opportunity to comment and participate. The TDAC board compiled three different maps that have been sent for consideration to the County Legislature. The Legislature will begin the process of reviewing the proposed maps, including providing the public with an opportunity to be heard, before ultimately voting on and adopting one map. The Legislature can also make changes to the maps that are submitted.
More information on the entire redistricting process, including a copy of the proposed maps, is available by clicking HERE.
