[ARCHIVED] Mangano Announces “Migrating Birds” Nature Walk at the Muttontown Preserve

East Norwich, NY – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that the Muttontown Preserve will present a guided nature walk entitled, “Migrating Birds,” on Sunday, September 7th from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

The three hour “Migrating Birds,” nature walk will provide a wealth of information on birds and their migration patterns, while showcasing all of the beautiful species of birds that find a home in the breathtaking preserve. Some possible bird sighting may include the Cedar Waxwing, the Great Horned Owl, the Indigo Bunting, Lawrence's Warbler, and the Scarlet Tanager.

The guide on the hike will also give a close-up demonstration of bird-banding. Bird-banding is a technique used to study the habits of wild birds, accomplished by placing a unique tag on each banded bird, so that studies can be conducted when the same bird is found later in a different location.

Comprising 550 acres of fields, woodlands, ponds and estate grounds, Muttontown is Nassau County’s largest nature preserve and one of the most beautiful settings on Long Island. The preserve includes miles of marked nature trails with local wildflowers, trees, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Muttontown also has several structures, including the renovated Chelsea estate, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Long Island Press has named Muttontown Preserve the “Best Nature Walk” on Long Island.

The walk is $5.00 and begins at the Bill Paterson Nature Center on the preserve. Enrollment is limited and pre-registration is required. Muttontown Preserve is located on Muttontown Lane, south of 25A, in East Norwich. For more information please call: (516) 571-8500.
