(MINEOLA, N.Y.) – In a 4-3 vote along party lines on Monday, April 3, the Nassau County Legislature’s Rules committee approved a $1 million increase to an outside counsel contract with Conway, Farrell, Curtin & Kelly P.C.
The firm is representing the County in its efforts to fully enforce the now-insolvent Armor Correctional Health, Inc’s defense and indemnification obligations under its previous inmate healthcare services contract with the County. Armor was faulted by investigators for multiple inmate deaths while providing healthcare services at the Nassau County Correctional Center from 2011 to 2017.
Following the Legislature’s most recent action, Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan M. Abrahams (D – Freeport) issued the following statement:
“This million-dollar legal bill is the latest fallout from Armor’s grotesque mismanagement at the Nassau County Correctional Center and a stark reminder of how Michael Sposato is a troubling common thread between the past and present,” Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan M. Abrahams (D – Freeport) said. “Not only did Mr. Sposato help saddle Nassau with Armor in the first place, since his return as Commissioner of Corrections, there been two inmate deaths at the jail in a three-month span. If we want to avert a full return to one of our County’s darkest hours, the Legislature must immediately schedule a public hearing to investigate conditions at the jail.”
