Dear Resident,
You may recall hearing about legislation that I recently co-sponsored to lower the number of years that volunteer firefighters and EMTs need to serve from five years to two years, in order to qualify for a partial property tax exemption on their county taxes. This partial exemption will start with the 2024-2025 tax year.
I am pleased to announce that earlier this week County Executive Blakeman signed that legislation into law! Our firefighters and ambulance personnel put their lives on the line every time they answer a call. This legislation is a way for Nassau County to recognize and reward these brave men and women for their dedicated service.
Additionally, as part of recognizing Volunteer Firefighter and Ambulance Worker Recruitment Week, Nassau County has created a new website, www.nassausbravest.com, to help bolster the ranks at local departments. Over the past 20 years, the number of volunteer firefighters in our county has dwindled so there is a need for new recruits to help protect our residents and communities. This new website can help anyone who is interested learn more about the role our volunteer firefighters and emergency medical service personnel perform everyday. It also provides an easy way to apply to join the ranks of our local heroes. 😊

As always, please feel free to contact me with any thoughts and ideas you may have with respect to the County or on any particular issue that you think I may be able to assist you with. You may contact me at (516) 571-6214 or by email at LSchaefer@NassauCountyNY.gov
Sincerely,
Laura M. Schaefer
