WHAT – In observance of June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month, Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) invites Nassau County residents to join her at “Pride on the Mile” – Freeport Village’s first-ever official Pride Month celebration – along the Nautical Mile on Saturday, June 10.
Presented by the Sparkle on Stage Cultural Center and the Joseph Anthony Smith Voice Studio in partnership with the LGBT Network, the event is scheduled to feature an array of performances at the Halfway Down Restaurant and vendors at Sparkle on Stage from 3 – 7 p.m. Later, from 8 – 10 p.m. at Sparkle on Stage, drag performers LaBelle, Bella Noche and Ivy Stalls will headline a special “Drag-aret” fundraiser.
“Pride on the Mile is a wonderful example of how Freeport’s flourishing LGBTQ+ community has grown to become an integral part of the fabric of our Village and the surrounding area,” Legislator Mulé said. “As a proud and dedicated ally to to the LGBTQ+ community, it has been a joy to witness how acceptance has grown in our hometown, and I encourage everyone to come down to the Nautical Mile and support an event that I hope will become an annual tradition.”
From 3 – 7 p.m., Legislator Mulé’s longtime friend and fellow 1980 Uniondale High School graduate, Christian Cooper, will host a voter registration drive. Cooper, who came to national prominence after being targeted with false and racially charged accusations while birding in Central Park in 2020, has both his TV series “Extraordinary Birder” on the Nat Geo Wild channel and Disney+, and his memoir “Better Living Through Birding” debuting the week after the festival. Yet, amidst that swirl of activity, he has chosen to spend this Saturday in Freeport.
“Nothing is more important than getting the LGBTQ+ voters of Long Island to the polls,” he explained.
