Open Letter from Legislator Mulé – Grand Avenue Sinkhole Repairs Nearing Completion

(BALDWIN, N.Y.) – The following is an open letter from Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) -

I wanted to take a moment to provide you with an update on the Grand Avenue sewer incident and express my gratitude to everyone in Nassau County government for their swift attention to this matter; to the workers who toiled in extreme heat to complete these crucial repairs; and especially to Baldwin-area residents for your patience throughout a truly unfortunate situation.

DPW officials have advised my office that the section of compromised sewer main within Grand Avenue was repaired and a structural pipe liner was installed within the sewer main and completed on Thursday, July 13th.

Driveway access to residents along the south side of Lorenz Avenue is expected to be restored on Wednesday, July 19th, and roadway restoration on Grand Avenue is scheduled to be completed and the roadway re-opened on Saturday, July 22nd.

Curb-to-curb roadway resurfacing is anticipated for Lorenz Avenue during the week of July 24 - 28, 2023 as the final phase of the emergency response work. Officials anticipate that the roadway resurfacing along Lorenz Avenue will require approximately three days to complete, with work being performed from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on consecutive weekdays.

This incident was truly a wake-up call for all of us, and I am committed to focusing on rebuilding and reinforcing Nassau County’s critical infrastructure. As we look ahead to the 2024 capital plan, I will make resources for road, sewer, and water infrastructure my top priority.
