[ARCHIVED] Mangano: Nassau Receives $136K Award from NYS to Enhance Safe Harbour Initiative for Exploited Youth

Mineola, NY - Nassau County Executive Mangano and Social Services Commissioner Dr. John Imhof today announced that Nassau County Department of Social Services (DSS) was awarded an additional $136,500 from New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) to continue its Safe Harbour program designed to provide programs and services for commercially exploited youth.

County Executive Mangano stated, “Nassau County is dedicated to addressing the service needs of children at-risk of, or victims of, sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. This grant will have a major role in eradicating trafficking and exploitation of youth while assisting victims with the Safe Harbour Project.”

Nassau County’s Safe Harbour Project is a countywide, coordinated, multi-system, long-term strategy to enhance the identification, protection and service delivery for children who are victims of human trafficking and to provide services to best meet their individual needs. The Advisory Group to the Safe Harbour Project includes representatives of the Nassau County Police Department, Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, Nassau County Department of Probation, The Safe Center LI and several community-based agencies.

DSS Commissioner Imhof added, “As evidenced in the County Executive Mangano’s commitment to raise public awareness regarding family violence, he is equally passionate about making the public aware of youth who are victims of commercial trafficking. We need to continue to raise awareness in all communities.”
