[ARCHIVED] Mangano Partners with Lions Club to Distribute Toys at the First "Holiday Polar Express"

Mineola, NY - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that the Lions Club of Nassau County and Bermuda are hosting the first “Holiday Polar Express” event to benefit children with special needs and children residing in shelters throughout the County. This event, which will take place on December 19th by invitation only, is the first of its kind in Nassau County. There are over 300 children expected to participate and every child will receive a holiday gift. In addition to a visit from Santa and his Elves, children will be provided lunch, can have their faces painted and participate in arts and crafts.

Several groups including the Lions Club, local merchants, community members and school districts throughout Nassau County held toy drives, collected winter items such as gloves, scarves, hats and mittens and donated over 600 toys and books for this event. Several schools also helped wrap over 300 gifts to be distributed at the December 19th party.

“The Lions Club is helping to make a world of difference to so many children and families throughout Nassau,” said County Executive Mangano. “Nassau County is proud to partner with the Lions Club to provide an opportunity for children in need to experience a special day during the holiday season.”

“The outpouring of volunteers and donations throughout our communities has been magnanimous. In addition to the toys, books and warm winter items, we have collected over 600 candy canes, 100 footballs and 50 playground balls. The upcoming holiday season will be a memorable and happy experience for many underprivileged children due to the generosity of Nassau County residents,” stated Nina Lanci, 1st Vice District Governor, Lions District 20K2.

Lions Club International, founded in 1917 provides aid to community residents in need throughout the world. “We are grateful to the Lions Club for sponsoring this special event and providing children and families with some holiday cheer,” added Dr. John Imhof, Commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Social Services. “They are an outstanding example how communities can join together to help its most vulnerable residents. We also want to recognize the Lions Club for providing close to a century of service to communities around the globe.”
