[ARCHIVED] West Hempstead Fire

The Arson/Bomb Squad reports the details of a fire which occurred on Friday, January 08, 2016 at 10:43 A.M. in West Hempstead.

According to detectives, Fifth Precinct Officers responded to 104 Hempstead Turnpike for a fire in the basement. Upon arrival they observed people trapped in a second floor apartment. The officers were able to gain access to the second floor with the use of a ladder and get the victims to safety. A male, 40 years of age and a female, 30 years of age were transported by county ambulance to an area hospital for treatment. West Hempstead Fire Department, along with three other departments’ assisted at scene, extinguishing the fire, using 12 pieces of apparatus and approximately 100 firefighters. Hempstead Police also assisted at the scene. Civilians and Officers were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. The fire appears non suspicious at this time and it is undetermined how it was started.
