Mangano And Krumpter Announce Operation Independence Weekend

MANGANO AND KRUMPTER ANNOUNCE OPERATION INDEPENDENCE WEEKEND

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano, Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter and Nassau County Police officials announced today their plans for Operation Independence Weekend. Nassau County Police will be out in force intensifying anti-terror patrols, monitoring social media and cracking down on drunk drivers on our roads and waterways. In addition, officers in the Nassau County Asset Forfeiture and Intelligence Unit will be working with partners in local, state and federal law enforcement to gather critical intelligence in an effort to ensure the safety of all residents.

In light of the recent terrorist attacks in Istanbul, Turkey, the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) has begun intensifying police patrols throughout local communities and has assigned officers from the NCPD’s Bureau of Special Operations and Criminal Intelligence Response Team to patrol local malls, areas of large gatherings and critical infrastructure. In addition, the NCPD will be monitoring social media for any potential threats or suspicious behavior.

“First and foremost, we extend our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families in this week’s terror attack that took place in Istanbul, Turkey,” said County Executive Mangano. “While there is no specific threat to Nassau County, we must all remain vigilant in the fight against terror as everyone can help be the eyes and ears for law enforcement. Is you See Something, Say Something and dial 911.”

In addition, NCPD will be assigning additional police officers as part of an extensive STOP-DWI enforcement initiative for the July 4th weekend. Enforcement for the weekend is being funded from a grant provided by the New York State STOP DWI Foundation with money from the NYS Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee through Nassau County STOP DWI. The funds will enable the NCPD and police departments throughout the county to implement an effective DWI saturation enforcement strategy that has proven very successful in years past. The NCPD’s Highway Patrol Bureau will coordinate and plan this initiative that will target certain areas throughout the county. There were 41 DWI arrests in Nassau County over last year’s July Fourth Holiday Weekend, and in 2015 there were 2,510 DWI arrests countywide.

Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter stated, “The Nassau County Police Department has a zero tolerance policy for those who drive under the influence putting those on the road at risk. This campaign is intended to identify and apprehend alcohol impaired drivers. Our aim will be to make the roadways safe for all drivers and our targets will be those who disregard the law.”

County Executive Mangano and Police Commissioner Krumpter remind everyone:
• If you plan to drink, choose a designated driver before going out.
• Take mass transit, a cab, or ask a sober friend to drive you home
• Spend the night where the activity is being held.
• Always buckle up – it’s your best defense against a drunk driver.

Lastly, County Executive Mangano and the NCPD remind residents of the dangers posed by fireworks. In 2014, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 7,000 people for fireworks related injuries between June 20th and July 20th. There were nine firework incident deaths reported of which two were not users. Statistics indicate that the risk of fireworks injury was highest for young people ages 15-24 followed by children under 10 years of age. There are many licensed professionals that perform firework presentations for the public and we ask that if you are interested in seeing fireworks you attend one as it is a safe way to enjoy the holiday.
