Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and State Assemblyman Brian Curran today honored Fred Kopf, a Baldwin Volunteer Firefighter and the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) Firefighter of the Year, with a Firematics Award in the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola.
County Executive Mangano stated, “Fred Kopf is an exemplary volunteer firefighter that typifies the 10,000 dedicated Nassau County volunteer first responders who place their lives on the line every day. We congratulate Fred on earning the title of Firefighter of the Year.”
In July 2015, the Baldwin Fire Department was dispatched to an initial report of smoke coming from an apartment on Old Mill Road - where the police reported that there were people trapped in the second floor apartment. Fred arrived in his personal vehicle and conducted a search, he found a 56 year-old male in the apartment and removed him to wait for EMS personnel outside. Fred went above and beyond the call of duty that day.
The FASNY award was presented to Fred on August 13th at FASNY’s 144th Annual Convention in Albany. Kopf will also receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Baldwin Fire Department later this year.
