[ARCHIVED] Mangano Swears In Social Services Commissioner Dr. John Imhof As President Of NY Public Welfare Assn

Mineola, NY – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that Commissioner John Imhof of the Nassau County Department of Social Services (DSS) has been elected by his 57 fellow commissioners as President of the New York Public Welfare Association (NYPWA). The County Executive administered an Oath of Office to Commissioner Imhof last evening in Albany.

“I was pleased to administer the oath of office to Dr. Imhof as he undertakes his responsibilities as President of the New York Public Welfare Association,” said County Executive Mangano. “Dr. Imhof continues to bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to both the Nassau County Department of Social Services and to the Association, and is dedicated to our collaborative mission of strengthening and preserving families.”

Sheila Harrigan, Executive Director of the NYPWA stated, “NYPWA has long benefitted from Dr. Imhof’s contributions since he became DSS Commissioner in 2006. His strong expertise and exceptional background in public service, health care administration and education make him an invaluable asset to the NYPWA and to his fellow Commissioners. We look forward to his leadership promoting NYPWA’s mission to improve the quality and effectiveness of social welfare policy so that it is both accountable to taxpayers and protective of vulnerable people throughout Nassau County and New York State.”

Dr. Imhof came to government in 2003 following his most recent position as Vice President for Behavioral Health Services of the North Shore – LIJ Health System, currently known as Northwell Health. In 2003. Dr. Imhof was appointed Commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Drug and Alcohol Addiction, and then appointed DSS Commissioner in 2006. Dr. Imhof holds a doctorate in Psychology and master’s degrees in Social Work, Health Care Administration and Education. He is an Adjunct Professor of Social Work at LIU Post and Chairperson of the County Executive’s Task Force on Family Violence.

The NYPWA represents the 58 local social services districts in New York State committed to improving the quality and effectiveness of social welfare policy for New York’s citizens. In addition to working collaboratively with all counties statewide, NYPWA also provides information and technical assistance to federal, state, and local policy makers.
