Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter honored three police officers, a police medic and four Hicksville firefighters with citations for their heroic rescue of three dogs from a house fire, at a press conference on Thursday, February 2nd at the Office of Emergency Management in Bethpage. Two of the dogs – Inca and Sasha—were in attendance at the press conference to thank the first responders.
“Nassau County is blessed to have such professional, hardworking and dedicated first responders,” said County Executive Mangano. “These police officers, firefighters and police medic are truly deserving of the recognition accorded to them for helping to save three dogs from a tragic ending. Working collaboratively, they truly made a difference. Their quick response and immediate action has made the difference between life and death.”
On Thursday, January 26th, first responders arrived on the scene of a house fire on Georgia Street in Hicksville. Upon arriving, they heard a dog barking inside. Police Officer Andrew Massa kicked in the front door, crawled on the floor to avoid the smoke, and found one dog, Inca, lying unconscious near the couch. Officer Michael Rothwell retrieved oxygen and aided Police Medic Benjamin Butt in administering oxygen to Inca. Officer Steven Tornetta then drove Inca to the nearest veterinarian. The team of Hicksville firefighters found the two other dogs, Sasha and Chloe, hiding under a kitchen table inside and were able to walk them out safely. Police Medic Butt administered oxygen to both of them—neither appearing to be seriously injured.
