Former Glenwood Fire Co. Treasurer Sentenced to Five Years’ Probation for Stealing more than $45,000

Robert Brown embezzled cash from the department’s membership fund and stole from an arcade machine

MINEOLA, N.Y. – Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that a Farmingdale man was sentenced today for stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the Glenwood Landing Fire Company.

Robert Brown

Robert Brown, 50, pleaded guilty on February 2 to one charge of Grand Larceny in the 3rd Degree before Judge Robert Bogle. The defendant was sentenced today by Judge Bogle to five years’ probation and restitution of $45,144.85.

“Robert Brown abused the trust given to him by the members of the Glenwood Landing Fire Department and stole more than $45,000 that was supposed to go to worthy causes,” DA Singas said. “With this sentence the defendant will make full restitution and pay for his crimes against his community.”

DA Singas said that between January 2011 and March 2015, the defendant, a former treasurer of the Glenwood Fire Company, stole approximately $45,144 by embezzling cash from the fire company’s “Membership Fund” account. As treasurer, Brown wrote checks from this account to the event chairperson for fire company events. When the leftover cash was returned to him he withheld the money and never re-deposited it into the account.

Brown also received large sums of cash from an arcade machine and safe inside the fire company and never deposited the money into the bank account. The thefts were first discovered by the fire company trustees when they realized $856 was left over from the 2014 annual children’s Christmas party and the sum was never re-deposited into the account.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Chief Robert Cavallo and Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Hernan of DA Singas’ Public Corruption Bureau. The defendant is represented by the Legal Aid Society.
