Mayor of Muttontown and Husband Arrested for Failing to File Taxes for Five Years

Julianne and Adam Beckerman allegedly owe more than $243,000 in personal income taxes

MINEOLA, N.Y. – Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced the arrests of the mayor of Muttontown and her husband, a gastroenterologist, for allegedly failing to file tax returns for five years.

Julianne Beckerman, 48, and Adam Beckerman, 55, both of Muttontown, were arraigned today before Judge Scott Siller and both charged with:

  • Criminal Tax Fraud in the Second Degree (a C felony)
  • Two counts of Criminal Tax Fraud in the Third Degree (a D felony)
  • Criminal Tax Fraud in the Fourth Degree (an E felony)
  • Three counts of Repeated Failure to File Personal Income and Earnings Taxes (an E felony)

BECKERMAN, JULIANNE

The defendants were released on their own recognizance and have surrendered their passports. They are due back in court on May 30. If convicted, they face a maximum of five to 15 years in prison.

“While nobody likes taxes, we are obligated to file them and pay our fair share, so it’s especially disturbing that a doctor and an elected official allegedly failed to file their taxes for five years.” DA Singas said. “My office works very closely with the State Department of Taxation and Finance to build criminal cases and our message is clear: file your taxes or face prosecution.”

“When taxpayers, especially elected officials who are supposed to lead by example, fail to pay their fair share of taxes, it hurts all honest New Yorkers by forcing them to shell out more of their hard-earned money to cover the difference,” said New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Acting Commissioner Nonie Manion. “Our agency will continue to work with law enforcement organizations across the state to protect New Yorkers from tax fraud crimes.”

DA Singas said following a joint investigation conducted by the NCDA and NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, it was determined that the defendants allegedly failed to file NYS personal tax returns for tax years 2010-2014, despite earning during those five years a total income in excess of $4.5 million. After reviewing extensive records, it was determined that the Beckermans allegedly owe taxes in the amount of $243,865.00.

Julianne Beckerman is the current mayor of Muttontown and Adam Beckerman is a gastroenterologist with a practice in Seaford.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Connie Gentile, Chief of DA Singas’ Public Assistance Frauds Unit, is prosecuting this case. The defendants are represented by Robert Altchiler, Esq.

The charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless found guilty.
