Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that Lynne Campbell, Nassau County Department of Social Services (DSS) Coordinator of Volunteers has been named the Public Citizen of 2017 by the National Association of Social Worker’s (NASW) Nassau Division. The award will be presented at a ceremony on Thursday, June 8th at Piccola Bussola restaurant in Mineola.
County Executive Mangano stated, “I congratulate Lynne for her hard work and dedication. Also a DSS Employee of the Month in 2009, Lynne is committed wholeheartedly to helping others and goes above and beyond making sure that people in need, especially our veterans, receive the assistance they need.”
The NASW Public Citizen of the Year Award is awarded annually to an individual that demonstrates a strong commitment to the social work profession, as well as continues to improve the quality of life in the community. The Public Citizen of the Year helps at-risk populations, acts with courage and demonstrates outstanding leadership.
“We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Campbell working at DSS and coordinating the Social Services Volunteer program,” said DSS Commissioner Dr. John Imhof. “Lynne has elevated and expanded the programs offered through volunteer services which benefit the neediest individuals and families in our communities. Volunteer Services helps veterans and unemployed individuals re-entering the workforce through its Dress-To-Impress program, coordinates a summer camp program for children, arranges a back pack program for the start of the school year with community partners, provides non-perishable food to individuals and families, and provides holiday gifts to children in foster care. Lynne’s energy is contagious which has encouraged many groups to participate in activities offered through volunteer services throughout the year.”
Commissioner Imhof also noted that Lynne Campbell is the second DSS Employee to be honored by NASW as Public Citizen of the Year. DSS Management Analyst Thomas Brooks was similarly honored in 2006.
