Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano honored 6 ordinary women who perform extraordinary acts, at the County’s 5th Annual Just Desserts Celebration—a Mother’s Day celebration honoring Women of Distinction—on Thursday, May 18th at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. County Executive Mangano presented citations to all of the honorees, as well as plaques to Gary Rogers and Brian Wasserman who serve on the Board of the Nassau County Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NCSPCA), which co-sponsored the event, for their unwavering dedication to the welfare of animals in Nassau County.
“The women of Nassau County being honored here tonight are nothing short of extraordinary,” said County Executive Mangano. “They have all made personal sacrifices and have shown selfless dedication when going above and beyond to help others. Congratulations to all of the honorees.”
This years’ honorees were: Laurie Cantileno-Lillis of Levittown, who supports educational and empowerment programs focused primarily on young women; Margo Cargill of Rockville Centre, credited with single-handedly restructuring, rebranding and relaunching the Uniondale Chamber of Commerce and recruiting an entire Board of Directors; Susan Sturgess of Floral Park, for her volunteer work with the Hospice Care Network; Meliawati Vodvarka of Seaford, a teacher’s aide for special needs children; Caterina Martino of Elmont, who donates backpacks and school supplies every year for less fortunate students; and Katie Grilli-Robles of North Bellmore, who volunteers at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, raising money to find homes for animals who have been abused and neglected.
Proceeds from the event benefitted the Nassau County SPCA. Guests were also treated to a Chinese Auction, and an array of desserts, donated by some of Nassau’s top bakers.
