a

(MINEOLA, NY) Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D-Great Neck) recognized Norooz – the Persian New Year, on Tuesday, March 20th at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building in Mineola. Norooz translates to new day and symbolizes renewal and growth. It is an ancient Zoroastrian holiday celebrated by Persians of all faiths on the Spring Equinox. Legislator Birnbaum partnered with several community organizations including, Sephardic Heritage Alliance Inc. (SHAI), Iranian Mother’s Association (IMA) and the United Mashadi Jewish Community of America (UMJCA). Legislator Birnbaum addressed a crowd of roughly 200 people at this first-time celebration of the Persian New Year at the Legislative Chamber. The program included remarks by Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, Nassau County Police Department Commissioner Patrick Ryder and Presiding Officer of the Nassau County Legislature Richard Nicollelo. Jacqueline Harounian, Vice President of SHAI explained the symbolism of the items on the Haft Seen or Persian ceremonial table which was on display at the front of the room. A Persian poetry recital was given by Parvaneh Sarraf, Founder and Chair of IMA and Farangiss Sedaghatpour, President of IMA. The highlight of the program was a rousing musical performance by the notable Parham Haghighi. Many of the songs were recognized by the crowd who were clapping and singing along with Mr. Haghighi. The event concluded with a beautiful spread of Persian refreshments donated by SHAI.
