(GREAT NECK, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D - Great Neck) recognized National Volunteer Month at the Great Neck Social Center by honoring individuals who give selflessly of themselves all year long. Legislator Birnbaum presented Certificates of Recognition to volunteers and board members at the Social Center, including a volunteer music therapist, an English teacher, amongst others.
In 1991, April became federally recognized as National Volunteer Month during the presidency of George H.W. Bush as part of his “Thousand Points of Light” community service and volunteerism initiative. The month long observance is an outgrowth of National Volunteer Week,
which was established in 1974. “Every day, people across Nassau County - just like the ones I met at the Great Neck Social Center - give freely of themselves as volunteers and improve the lives of their neighbors,” Legislator Birnbaum said. “I encourage everyone to join forces with these impressive individuals
and do their part to make the world around them more caring and compassionate.”
