(Mineola, NY) – As we recognize past and present Veterans this Memorial Day, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran joined local veterans, Director of the Veterans Service Agency Ralph Esposito and County Assessor David Moog to announce a new veterans hiring initiative.

Nassau County’s Department of Assessment and Assessment Review Commission worked with the County’s Civil Service Commission to modify the Community Service Assistant requirements to allow the departments to give veterans preference in hiring - with priority given to disabled veterans. The agencies will be working in coordination with the County’s Veteran Services Agency as well as state and federal veterans’ organizations. Both agencies look forward to hiring veterans to assist in communication and outreach for property owners.

“We are proud that Nassau County is home to one of the largest veterans’ populations in the nation. We must never forget the sacrifices our veterans have made to serve our country,” said Curran. “This initiative demonstrates our ongoing commitment to provide tangible support and opportunities for our local veterans to ensure these brave men and women can thrive here in Nassau County. It’s our goal to ensure that every veteran regardless of a disability has a fair opportunity.”

“As a son of a veteran, this hiring initiative is a meaningful measure of our gratitude to all veterans for the personal sacrifices they made to protect our freedoms,” said Moog. “This is a win – win for our department. As we work to fill necessary positions, we are proud to have local veterans join as valued members of our team.”

“This is another step forward in providing more and more quality jobs and opportunities for veterans. As we remember fallen heroes and honor veterans near and far this Memorial Day, I want to encourage all employers to engage with your local veterans’ organizations and hire a local hero,” said Esposito.

The County Executive also discussed the 8th annual Job/Career & Veterans Fair at Nassau Community College, happening today from 10am – 2pm. The event is hosted by Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams and Legislator Siela A. Bynoe. The Legislators are offering companies, businesses and educational facilities a better chance to target prospective employees; including veterans and youth. The event includes an employment resource fair for veterans and employers with youth summer job positions are sought.

Last month, in collaboration with Legislator Lafazan, County Executive Curran signed into law a ban on housing discrimination against veterans in Nassau County. Nassau also established a Commission on Ending Veterans Homelessness to produce recommendations regarding transitional housing, vocational training, financial literacy, mental health services, and other potential needs.

In addition, the County Executive recently signed into law legislation that will give veterans employed by the county credit toward retirement health care benefits for up to three years in the military.

“It’s important that we let those who served our country know that we are thankful for their service. It’s even more important that we demonstrate our gratitude to them,” said Curran.
