Weather Statement from Nassau County Executive Laura Curran

MINEOLA, NY – As Nassau County is now under a Tropical Storm warning, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran urges residents to take caution. Tropical Storm Fay is expected to hit Nassau County Friday morning into Saturday and has potential for flash flooding which can make for hazardous road conditions. There is a potential for strong winds, which can cause power outages, and dangerous rip currents, as well as coastal and local flooding. Nassau County’s Office of Emergency Management is monitoring the situation and in constant contact with local municipalities, the Nassau County Police Department, Fire Marshal, PSEG-LI, National Grid, Red Cross, NICE Bus and others to coordinate efforts in the case of a severe weather emergency.

REMINDER OF STORM PREP TIPS FOR RESIDENTS:

  • Create an emergency preparedness kit with food and water, batteries and other basic supplies for each family member to last at least three days. Remember to include essential medications, copies of important documents and special items for children and pets.   • If you are in a flood zone know your evacuation route and create a plan with your family
  • Keep a list of emergency phone numbers
  • Plan what to do in case you are separated from your family during an emergency and what to do if you must evacuate.
  • Check on any elderly or disabled neighbors
  • Make sure all leaks and repairs are secure on your home
  • If a storm is predicted, remove any loose items from your yard
