County Executive Curran Recognizes Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Nassau County, NY – Nassau County Executive Laura Curran is recognizing March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month with a dome lighting and virtual event. The event and dome lighting are both a part of County Executive Curran’s mission to provide equitable health outreach across all communities in Nassau and promote preventive healthcare to keep residents healthy.

“My administration remains committed to battling health inequities across our County by promoting the importance of routine healthcare.  This March let’s spread awareness about colorectal cancer, a cancer that disproportionately affects communities of color, and encourage preemptive screenings that can save lives,” said Nassau County Executive Curran.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer for both men and women in the US and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in New York State. The cancer disproportionately affects communities of color with African Americans having the highest incidence of colorectal cancer nationally.

To raise awareness of Colorectal Cancer Awareness about the importance of annual screenings, the County will be lighting the dome of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative building in Mineola blue throughout the end of the month.

In addition, the Nassau County Office of Minority Affairs and Office of Health Equity in collaboration with the Cancer Services Program of Nassau County are hosting an online event, “Community Conversation about Colorectal Cancer,” on Wednesday, March 31 at 6pm. The panel discussion will feature health experts addressing what you need to know about colorectal cancer, screenings and treatment.  The event will be livestreamed on Facebook at
