Mulé Honors Tom Schule for Feeding Thousands of Hospital Employees During COVID-19 Pandemic

(FREEPORT, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé (D - Freeport) presented a Nassau County Citation to Lynbrook resident Tom Schule, co-owner of Freeport’s Halfway Down restaurant, in recognition of his tireless efforts to feed hospital employees and first responders throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last spring, Schule pooled resources with fellow Halfway Down co-owners Kevin Calhoun (pictured above, right) and Richard Duffy to make meals for COVID-19 first responders and deliver them to area hospitals. The initiative started with Mt. Sinai South Nassau Hospital and branched out to seven area hospitals; ultimately, thousands of meals were delivered to those on the front lines through the effort.

“During the darkest hours of the COVID-19 pandemic, so many members of our community stepped up and went above and beyond to help others. Tom Schule and everyone at Halfway Down are shining examples of the human generosity that sustained us at the height of the pandemic,” Legislator Mulé said. “His philanthropic spirit fueled Halfway Down’s efforts to deliver thousands of sandwiches - and most importantly, hope - to hospital employees in our region, and we will be forever grateful for all he has done to lift up our community.”
