Birnbaum Announces Passage of Resolution to Ceremonially Rename Road ‘Great Gatsby Way'

(GREAT NECK ESTATES, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Ellen W. Birnbaum (D - Great Neck) is pleased to announce that her proposal to ceremonially rename a portion of Middle Neck Road at Cedar Drive in Great Neck Estates “Great Gatsby Way” was unanimously approved by the full Legislature on Monday, Sept. 27.

“Today’s vote enshrines the legacy of F. Scott Fitzgerald and ‘The Great Gatsby’ in the neighborhood where he lived for two years as he wrote his most celebrated work,” Legislator Birnbaum said. “I thank my colleagues for unanimously approving a fitting public tribute for this literary giant.”

Monday’s action clears the way for the new road sign to be unveiled during Destination: Great Neck’s inaugural “Gatsby Fest,” a street fair scheduled for noon - 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17 at the intersection of Middle Neck Road and Cedar Drive. There, a celebration of Great Neck history and Fitzgerald’s “West Egg” is slated to include live jazz, dancing, notable speakers and more.

"Bringing Great Neck’s literary heritage into its streetscape is a valuable part of our placemaking project to affirm and celebrate Great Neck and its diversity and as a premier destination for locals and visitors alike,” said Matthew Wigler, a Destination: Great Neck board member.

“We are grateful to Legislator Birnbaum and the County Legislature for taking this important step to commemorate Great Neck’s extraordinary past as we build upon our community’s bright future,” said Janet Nina Esagoff, Founder of Destination: Great Neck.
