Earlier this week, I joined my colleagues in the Legislative Majority to announce sound and meaningful amendments to the County Executive's 2022 budget that will cut taxes, eliminate or reduce fees and do away with unnecessary patronage jobs. These amendments do not cost the residents any additional money, but instead will put money back into their pockets where it belongs.
Specifically, our proposed amendments include:
- Cutting taxes by an additional $50 million, bringing the total overall property tax cut to $120 million.
- Removing $100 million in real estate transaction and traffic violation fees, including red light camera surcharges. These fees are incurred each year by thousands of Nassau County residents and often result in hundreds or thousands of dollars more for those who are buying, selling, or refinancing a home, as well as for those who are filing a deed, a satisfaction of mortgage or similar documents with the county clerk’s office.
- Cutting millions of dollars in wasteful political patronage positions, including seven additional public relations staffers hired by the County Executive since taking office.
I am proud to support these budget changes to cut taxes and fees that will help our seniors, veterans, and working-class families by providing financial relief at a time when they need it most. All of these amendments are attainable while ensuring that the fiscal health of the county remains intact. I urge the County Executive to support these measures once they are passed at the next full meeting of the legislature on October 18th.
