Dear Resident,
Recently, I joined my colleagues in the Legislative Majority to approve sound and meaningful amendments to the County Executive's 2022 budget that will cut taxes by
$120 million, eliminate or reduce $100 million in fees and do away with unnecessary patronage jobs in the County Executive’s office. Rather than supporting these measures, the County Executive has decided to veto every single one of our amendments.
Earlier today, the Legislative Majority attempted an override of the County Executive’s veto. For that to be successful, a super-majority of 13 votes were required, so we needed at least two members of the Democrat Caucus to join with us. Sadly, all eight Democrat Caucus legislators failed to support the veto override choosing not to cut millions in taxes and fees for Nassau residents.
As your legislator, I will always fight to reduce taxes and do everything possible to help our seniors, veterans, and working and middle-class families. These amendments would have put more money in the pockets of our residents while ensuring the fiscal health of the county remained intact. At a time when many of our residents are still struggling from the effects of the pandemic, it’s shameful that a golden opportunity to provide sustainable, long-lasting financial relief is being disregarded by the current administration and our fellow Democratic Caucus legislators.
As always, please feel free to contact me with any thoughts and ideas you may have with respect to the County or on any particular issue that you think I may be able to assist you with. You may contact me at (516) 571-6214 or by email at LSchaefer@NassauCountyNY.gov
Have an enjoyable, restful weekend. 😊
