Minority Leader Abrahams to Executive Blakeman: Give Residents More Time to Grieve their Taxes

(MINEOLA, N.Y.) - Today, Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan M. Abrahams (D - Freeport) urged Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman to immediately extend the deadline for residents to file assessment challenges with Nassau County’s Assessment Review Commission (ARC) to Monday, May 2.

In a Monday, Jan. 31 letter to County Executive Blakeman, Minority Leader Abrahams wrote that the extension is necessary due to the “myriad of economic challenges that have been caused by COVID-19 and the ongoing disruption to the housing market because of the pandemic.”

“It is therefore our shared belief that an extension to the filing deadline, similar to the extensions provided in previous years and even predating the pandemic, is necessary to ensure that residents have a full opportunity to robustly exercise their rights as Nassau County property owners,” Minority Leader Abrahams wrote. “Residents should be immediately notified of the extended deadline as part of the ‘Notice of Tentative Assessed Value’ which must be issued to property owners this week.”

The current deadline for residents to file assessment challenges is Tuesday, March 1.
