Nassau County made a commitment more than thirty years ago when it became one of the first county governments in the nation to establish a county agency dedicated to providing programs and services for the over 60 population. As the designated Area Agency on Aging for Nassau County under the federal Older Americans Act, with additional support from the New York State Office for the Aging and Nassau County, we empower older persons to live more independently in their own homes and communities. Our updated web site now offers information about a vast array of programs and services designed to enhance the lives of our County's 287,000 senior residents.
We hope you find this site useful in identifying the many resources available to senior citizens and their caregivers. If you have any questions or need additional assistance, please contact our Help-Line at (516) 227-8900. We are here to help you!

The NASSAU COUNTY OFFICE FOR THE AGING is responsible for advising the County Executive and government officials on the problems and needs of the County's 289,000 residents age 60 and over. As the official Area Agency on Aging for Nassau County, the Office develops a county-wide plan to provide services that assist older persons to remain independent and living in their own homes for as long as possible. The Office also serves as a funding agency for programs offered by other voluntary and government agencies. It provides more than 70 programs in the areas of health, counseling, employment, legal services, home care, transportation, nutrition, etc., to improve the quality of life for older persons. The Office also serves as an advocate for the elderly. More recently, Nassau NY*Connects, provides persons of all ages with information, referrals, and assistance in accessing long term care services and programs.
The Office operates one five-day-a-week multi-purpose senior center. In cooperation with local community agencies, the Office maintains 13 additional senior centers which provide daily hot lunches and social and recreational programs, four adult day service centers, and eight senior lunch programs.
Speakers are available to address service organizations, community groups, church and temple groups, and schools. Copies of Department publications on many subjects of interest to seniors, their families, and other members of the aging network are available.
The Office supports and recommends legislation at state and federal levels that will positively impact the lives of seniors living in Nassau County. Testimony is given at legislative and public hearings, and information on legislative issues affecting older persons is provided on request. A Legislative Technical Advisory Committee of senior citizens meets with the Office on a continuing basis to develop recommendations reflecting a consensus of their thinking.
The NASSAU COUNTY OFFICE FOR THE AGING has earned a national reputation as a model office for the aging. It has been called "one of the most effective agencies in the nation serving the elderly." The National Association of Counties has cited the Office as an "outstanding example of how a county works with and for its elderly citizens."
