If You Disagree With Your Assessment

You have a legal right to protest your assessment. If you believe that the values for your property are not accurate and/or would like to challenge your property's tax classification or exemption status, you may file an "Application for Correction of Assessment" with the Assessment Review Commission (ARC) between January 4, 2016 - March 1, 2016.

ARC is an independent agency (separate from the Department of Assessment) that is responsible for determining the merits of each challenge. ARC may order the Department of Assessment to reduce an assessment, change a property tax classification or apply a property tax exemption prior to the adoption of the Final Assessment Roll on April 1st, but it cannot order an assessment to be increased.

Homeowners who did not receive a property tax exemption determination from the Department of Assessment by February 1st, should also file the "Application for Correction of Assessment" with ARC before the grievance period closes.

An "Application for Correction of Assessment" may be obtained from the Department of Assessment's Fourth Floor offices located at 240 Old Country Road, Mineola between 8:00 a.m. and 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the filing period.

The "Application for Correction of Assessment" is also available and can be filed online.

A hearing may also be requested with ARC upon submission of the grievance application. For further information on the grievance process, please contact ARC at (516) 571-3214.
