DeRiggi-Whitton on Blakeman Administration Hiring Outside Counsel to Defend Exorbitant Fees in Court

(MINEOLA, N.Y.) – On Monday, May 6, the Rules committee of the Nassau County Legislature voted 4-3 – with the Democratic Minority united in opposition - to authorize a $750,000 contract with Rosenberg Calica & Birney LLC to defend the County from challenges to its Driver Responsibility, Public Safety, and Red-Light Violations Fees.

In separate action, the Rules committee approved – again by a 4-3 margin along party lines – to support a home rule message calling for the State to extend authorization for the County’s red light camera program.

Following today’s action, Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove) issued the following statement:

“The Democratic Minority will not support the use of Nassau taxpayer dollars to defend the charging of exorbitant fees - one of which has even been declared illegal by the courts,” Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove) said. “We must immediately begin working toward achieving legal compliance by reducing fees in the most fiscally responsible manner possible. Otherwise, the County will only make itself vulnerable to future legal liability - and Nassau taxpayers will once again be on the hook.”
