TRAINING: On Sunday December 4, 2011 Nassau County Fire Marshals and Nassau County Fire Communications personnel attended special training to familiarize with the F.E.M.A. National Response Framework. The NRF is the document which guides and outlines response to major incidents nationwide. The principals contained in the document foster a cooperative inter-agency approach, and readiness posture for responders. The strategies relate to "all hazards" both natural and man-made, and can be implimented in whole or part as a specific incident dictates. The National Response Framework also speaks to the need for the Public (you) to be prepared for an emergency or incident which may disrupt normal life. Each and every family should have their "own" disaster plan, and "ready kit" to act on a moments notice. A full working knowledge of the NRF and companion National Incident Management System (NIMS) is now required for all agencies (State and Local) to receive federal funds for emergency response and recovery activities. Training, Capability, and Readiness are "job one" for the Nassau County Fire Commission. Check out the NRF here: FEMA National Response Framework (Resource Center)

ENFORCEMENT:
November 15th 2011. In a county of 1.3 million people, fire safety is always a top priority. Even so, holiday time warrants "special" attention. Nassau County Fire Marshals have begun "Holiday Safety" details in public assembly structures including all Nassau County malls. The details are conducted to insure the public remains safe while shopping and enjoying the holiday season. These extra patrols are added each year when these locations are at their busiest, and life hazard the highest. Enforcement will focus on fire & life safety systems, clear aisles, and properly working emergency exit doors. Penalties for the most serious infractions (such as locked or blocked emergency doors) result in a fine of up to $5,000 per count. In addition, many fire code violations in Nassau County are Misdemeanors which can result in the arrest of the person creating or maintaining the hazardous condition. We care about your safety!
FIRE PREVENTION: October 26th 2011. To wrap up Fire Prevention Month officials from the Nassau and Suffolk County Fire Marshals Office took part in a fire safety event at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Educational Center. The event was held to honor McDonalds Restaurant's long standing committment to fire safety and assisting local fire departments in educating the public. McDonalds once again this year donated fire safety materials that were distributed to children and families across Long Island. In addition to this, McDonalds partnered with the Kidde Corporation, who donated Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors for upcoming fire prevention and fire safety programs to be conducted by the Nassau and Suffolk County Fire Marshals Office. We thank both McDonalds and Kidde for their outstanding cooperation and support. We also thank the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Educational Center for hosting the event.

SAFETY: As temperatures begin to fall, fires will rise in Nassau County. This Fall, make fire safety a top priority for "your" family. A leading cause of home fires in Fall are Portable Electric Heaters. Before using a portable heater this season, be certain it is in good working order, and use it in accordance with established safety guidelines. Keep portable heaters at least 3 feet from any combustible materials. Never use an extension cord to supply a portable heater. Keep children and pets away from portable heaters to preventing tipping and burn injuries. For more information click here Portable Heater Safety

NEWS: "Pink Fire Trucks" arrive in Nassau County.

Photos & Video by NCFM Public Affairs Unit
On Monday September 19th, "Pink" Fire Trucks and a pink police cruiser escorted by the Nassau "Fire Riders" Motorcycle Club and local fire apparatus rolled into Nassau County to promote awareness of Women's Cancer Issues. The "Pink Heals" Tour travels the nation raising awareness and encouraging people to pick up the cause of cancer prevention and research. Several thousand dollars were raised by the event. The event coordinator offered remarks, as well as Chief Instructor John Murray of the Nassau Fire Museum. Other speakers included representatives from the Pink Heals Tour, and the director of a local cancer support group. Since Nassau County was chosen as a "stop" for the nationwide tour, we have now been given the challenge to begin a local chapter, and create our "own" Pink Fire Truck" to promote the cause. More on this great cause can be found here http://www.pinkfiretrucks. org/ The complete photo album of our event coverage and participation can be found on the Nassau County Fire Marshal Facebook page.

PREPARDNESS - On Sunday September 18th, Nassau County Fire Marshals participated in a department-wide readiness exercise and training. The exercise tested our ability to respond quickly on a department level to a large scale emergency. The exercise featured the activation and testing of a specialized communications system to simultaneously alert all Fire Marshal personnel to a simulated event. During such activations, each member has a specific assignment and task to perform. The drill was a part of our larger ongoing Homeland Security efforts at the Nassau County Fire Commission.
